Criticism of the “champion’s champion” competition
News24 Has previously reported on how a viewer reported the program to the Review Board due to the competition’s design.
“In the competition ‘Balloon’, the participants compete in holding a helium balloon and the one who releases last wins. They competed outdoors and therefore release a number of large plastic balloons straight into nature. Something that could easily have been solved by tie the balloon so that it does not pull away with the wind and scraped down in nature. its notification to the authority, which has not yet made a decision whether the case should be tried or not.
Also on the program’s official Facebook page, viewers criticized the competition-something that the “champions champion” production later answered.
“The balloons are specially ordered. They are made of Naturlax and are 100 % degradable,” wrote in the comments field.

Keep Sweden Clean: “May lead to serious injuries or death”
But Johanna RagnartzCEO of the non -profit organization Keep Sweden Clean, does not buy SVT’s response, but believes that the channel “is wrong” about the balloons.
“Balloons, whether made of plastic or latex (natural rubber), breaks down slowly in nature and it can cause great damage in the meantime. Animals are at risk of missing balloon pieces for food or get stuck in the cords, which can lead to serious injuries or death,” she writes to News24 and continues on:
“There are few scientific studies on the degradation time for latex balloons, but the investigations done show that visible balloon residues may remain for up to five years where they end up as debris. Regardless of the material, it is always counted as debris to release or throw balloons in nature.”
SVT: “Both ecologically and competition -safely”
When News24 contacts SVT for a comment on the criticism, from the viewers as well as keep Sweden clean, the project manager answers Clara Mannheimer This is how:
“The balloons are specially purchased and of degradable material that does not harm nature. The reason we do not let them get stuck in the cords is that it is windy at the competition site and a risk that the balloon is stuck in a string disturbing the other competitors. This is thus one – both ecological and competition – safe way.”
