SVT’s Middle East correspondent on the attacks against Hezbollah in Beirut

Hassan Nasrallah led Hezbollah for over 30 years. Under his leadership, the power of the terrorist-branded Iran-backed militia has grown both in Lebanon and across the Middle East. In Lebanon today, Hezbollah is a state within a state.

If Nasrallah, as many fear, has been killed in Friday’s Israeli attack in Beirut, it would mean an incredible blow to Hezbollah, both morally and strategically, says Stina Blomgren.

An already uncertain development has apparently gained a whole new escalation, and all eyes are now on Hezbollah’s sponsor Iran. The Shia militia’s arsenal of weapons is large and there are already calls for revenge.

– If parts of that arsenal are now used, it would mean a huge escalation for the entire Middle East, says Stina Blomgren.
