SVT’s correspondent: So the US has downgraded Europe

European countries will have the opportunity to consult upcoming peace talks on Ukraine – but are not allowed to take a seat at the negotiating table. The message on Saturday from Keith Kellogg, USA’s special envoy for Russia and Ukraine, is in hand with the message that Vice President Vance delivered in his speech during Friday where he claimed that Europe “obvious” will participate.

“It is obvious that the days I have experienced here have increased the departure between Europe and the United States, at least verbally,” says SVT’s European correspondent Christoffer Wendick, in place at the Security Conference in Munich.

Should only monitor peace

According to Wendick, the noises between Europe and the United States do not seem to be as harsh and confrontative in context during the conference that is less public than, for example, JD Vance speech, which has aroused strong reactions.

– But no matter how you turn and twist it, Europe has been downgraded and can no longer take a seat at the table where perhaps the most important security decision in our time should be made, but is now seen by the United States more as police officers who will monitor that peace is kept.

The United States has already begun to request evidence from European countries to find out what Europe can provide for security guarantees to Ukraine. That’s what Finnish President Alexander Stubb says Reuters.

The request from the United States was sent, according to Finanical Timesout earlier this week and comes before the tour to European capitals that Keith Kellogg is going out next week.

“It disturbs many here,” says Christoffer Wendick about the US request.

Can force Putin into concessions

In a panel discussion during the Security Conference, Keith Kellogg developed his thoughts for upcoming peace talks with Russia and said that Putin there may be forced into territorial concessions, almost three years after Russia’s full -scale invasion.

– We can force him into things he is not comfortable with.

Kellogg also points to Russia’s oil income and the country’s relationships with North Korea, China and Iran as such as the United States can strike through sanctions.

According to the reports to Reuters and Politico Representatives of the United States, Russia and Ukraine will start talks in Saudi Arabia within the next few days. Kellogg, on the other hand, will not attend there, according to the information.
