SVT on site in Austria: “They are talking about a second wave tomorrow”

With canceled flights and completely flooded roads, it was not easy for the correspondent to get to the Austrian capital.

– You pass through a thick cloud of rain that lies like a lid over not only Vienna, but all of Central Europe. And with very strong winds, the airport here has not been able to receive as many planes as usual, says Wendick.

And yet the worst is not over.

– There is talk that there could be a second wave tomorrow that could hit with similar force to what we have seen today.

Has become a “locked mode”

The rainfall in the Czech Republic, Austria, Romania, Germany and Poland is nothing out of the ordinary for any of the countries.

SVT’s meteorologist Åsa Rasmussen explains how the storm became so persistent without moving:

– In the weather pattern we have now with a large high pressure east and west of the rain area, it will be a locked situation. Something you usually call weather blocking. It has been in the same area for a long time, she says.

The challenges in the affected countries are already great. In Romania several people have died and in the Czech Republic people are reported missing.

Poland has declared a national state of emergency after a dam burst on Sunday. German authorities are also warning that dams on the Elbe River may burst.
