SVT learns: The Tidö parties want to revoke citizenship for gang criminals

The Tidö Agreement states that an investigation must draw up proposals on how citizenship can be revoked for those with dual citizenship who have committed system-threatening crime or whose citizenship was granted as a result of incorrect information.

Proposal for change

This is one of several issues that the constitutional committee, with representatives from all parties in the Riksdag, has been investigating since 2023. On Wednesday, the committee is expected to present its conclusions, and according to information to SVT, a change to the constitution will be proposed which means that citizenship can be revoked in certain CASE.

This concerns, for example, cases where citizenship has been granted as a result of false information, or if the person has been convicted of crimes under the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court, such as genocide. This assumes that the person in question has dual citizenship.

The Tidö parties want to go further

However, the Tidö parties want to go further than that, and are expected to propose in their own statement that Swedish citizenship should be able to be revoked for people with dual citizenship who commit crime that threatens the system, for example in the case of serious violent crimes in a gang environment, SVT learns.

When the committee has presented its conclusions, the Tidö parties can choose to proceed with their own proposals for changes to the law. In order for the constitution to be changed, however, two votes in the Riksdag are required, with a parliamentary election in between.

Harsh criticism from S

Rud Stenlöf (S) sits as a member of the committee and is disappointed that the Tidö parties plan to present their own opinion on a constitutional amendment, as the purpose of the committee is to produce proposals that a broad majority supports.

– It is deeply regrettable that you do not choose to stand up for the common product that we worked on together, says Rud Stenlöf.

She also calls Tidöpartierna’s own writing “non-serious, legalistic and sloppy”.

– It could be applied to tax offences, accounting offenses or if you forgot a secret document at a course farm, she says.

SVT Nyheter has applied for the Tidö parties. The Liberals have declined to comment.
