Biathlon is environmentally dangerous and can now change.
Then Björn Ferry wants the sport to do something completely different.
– All this stuff will come sooner or later, says the expert to SVT Sport.
Soon we may see decisive changes for the sport of biathlon. The riders’ lead bullets are classified as environmentally dangerous and need to be replaced to save the environment around the shooting ranges.
Ferry’s proposal
The European Chemicals Agency, ECHA, wants to introduce stricter requirements to deal with the lead residues that remain after the shootings, and this could hit the sport of biathlon hard. It will be difficult to exclude the lead bullet completely in biathlon, as today there is no other type of ammunition that is as cost-effective and accurate as possible.

But now comes the former Swedish biathlete and now the SVT expert Bjorn Ferry with a completely new proposal. Namely, that the sport is moving completely to electronic shooting.
– We shouldn’t spread the lead in nature, that’s what most people agree on, so then you have to find another type of ammunition or switch to lasers, and that’s what I think biathlon and sport shooting will do over time. You don’t have to shoot sharp, says Ferry to SVT Sport.

“Not ready”
Laser technology already exists today, but it will probably take a long time before biathlon switches completely to the digital solution on the shooting ranges.
– It’s like with the fluoride ban and stop herding, you can do it quite quickly, but it will be a long process because there are so many interests involved, says Ferry in his analysis.

The 44-year-old also doesn’t think biathlon is ready for this big change yet.
– No, the sport is not at all ready for that, there is rarely anyone who is ready for big steps. But look ahead, where will we be in 20 years? If you see it, it is easier to realize that we live in a time of change and then you can take these steps quite quickly if you know that this is what we will do. But if you see an opportunity to stay and just protest then you will do it, says Björn Ferry to SVT.
