Sustainable trips are increasing in Umeå – but most people still take the car

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

At the end of September, 30,000 randomly selected people received an invitation to participate in the survey, which is the largest that Umeå Municipality has ever conducted. Umeå residents’ trips were tracked via an app and over 140,000 trips were registered.

– Over 2,300 Umeå residents shared roughly 32,000 travel days. A fantastic commitment that has given us a good base to work on and use when Umeå continues to grow towards 200,000 inhabitants, says statistician Linnea Persson.

Only 5 percent of trips were by bus

The survey shows that almost half of all trips within the urban area, 40 percent, are made by car. 33 percent on foot, 20 percent by bicycle and only 5 percent by bus. In other words, there is a long way to go until the municipality’s goal that 65 percent of all trips must be sustainable by the year 2025 is met.

– It’s fun that it seems that sustainable travel is increasing, but we still have some way to go until we reach our goal, says Linnea Persson.
