The scammer, police said, approached the victim while both were participating on an online video game forum. The scammer then spent time getting to know the victim, building a sense of trust, and then used that information to steal roughly $6,000 in cryptocurrency from the Tillsonburg resident.

Part of the ongoing challenge of preventing online fraud, police noted, is the sheer variety –- and constant variations – of the scams.

Despite the embarrassment some may feel, the Oxford OPP encourages fraud victims to contact local police and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Center as soon as possible.
