Ten suspected people smugglers have been arrested by authorities in Pakistan. The crackdown comes just days after several hundred people are feared to have drowned off the coast of Greece.

Every year thousands of young Pakistanis leave in search of a better future in Europe – for many it is often a dangerous and illegal journey. Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif now wants to see tougher measures against people smuggling and promises tough punishments.

Many Pakistanis are believed to be among the victims of the tragedy that occurred off the Greek coast earlier this week. 78 people have been confirmed dead but several hundred are missing. Between 400 and 750 people are believed to have been on board the ferry, according to the UN.
