It was on Monday that German police were able to arrest one of the members of the German left-wing radical Red Army Faction (RAF), Daniela Klette.
Klette, or “Claudia,” as she was known by neighbors, was arrested in an apartment in the Kreuzberg district of Berlin, after more than three decades on the run.
The now 65-year-old Klette is the only woman on Europol’s list who is classified as “dangerous”, but despite that, the arrest went smoothly. The “RAF pensioner” did not resist when she was arrested.
Reward
It was after the German equivalent of the “Wanted” TV program last November brought Klette and the RAF to the attention of the police that tips started pouring in. One of the reasons why around 250 tips came in is believed to be the hit salary of the equivalent of just under 1.7 million Swedish kronor (150,000 euros).
The RAF, also known as the Baader-Meinhof League, terrorized West Germany during the 1970s and 1980s with their actions. Some 30 murders of, among other things, politicians and business leaders, bombings and kidnappings are on the league’s conscience. The group is also behind the bombing of the West German embassy in Stockholm in 1975.
The search continues
The radical left-wing terrorist group was disbanded in 1998, but Daniela Klette went along with two other members, Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garweg, underground.
German police said on Wednesday they had released a man arrested hours after Klette. The man was arrested on suspicion of being one of the missing men, but that was not the case.
In mid-February, the police received a tip that Ernst-Volker Staub had been seen on a train in Wuppertal in western Germany, according to Deutsche Welle.
The task force stormed the city’s central station in the hope of arresting the 70-year-old. However, it turned out not to be true and both Staub and Garweg are still at large.
