US authorities are investigating an envelope containing a suspicious powder sent to a Republican gubernatorial candidate in Arizona.

Police and emergency services were called to Republican Kari Lake’s headquarters at 2 a.m. Sunday. No one is said to be injured, but the person in Lake’s staff who opened the envelope is under observation.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs said in a statement that the incident is incredibly troubling and that she is grateful that neither Lake nor her staff were injured.

Mid-term elections are held in the United States on Tuesday. Then representatives are appointed to the two chambers of Congress: the Senate (35 out of a hundred seats) and the House of Representatives (all 435 seats). In addition, 39 governors are to be voted for.
