Suspected illegal wolverine hunting discovered in Gällivare

It was in connection with the annual dna inventory of wolverines at the beginning of March that staff from the County Administrative Board discovered wolverine tracks at the foot of the mountain Guorbbavarto in Gällivare municipality.

Wolverine tracks followed by several snowmobile tracks, apparently to catch up with the wolverine. The incident has been reported to the police.

Pursuit a hunting crime

– Deliberately pursuing and hunting down a protected animal on a motor vehicle is considered a hunting offence, says Erik Granerot, head of unit at the Nature Management Unit at the County Administrative Board in Norrbotten.

The hunting of wolverines is very limited and can only be conducted as a licensed hunt or protected hunt decided by the County Administrative Board.

– If you see a wolverine, you should definitely not follow it with a motor vehicle. If you discover traces or spillage, you must report it, says Erik Granerot.
