Suspect holding weapon near school arrested twice in two days: Police

Woodstock police say they believe a suspect carrying a weapon arrested twice within two days near a downtown school was not targeting the school.

Officers responded on Tuesday at around 9:15 am to reports of a person waving their arms in the air and holding what appeared to be a knife in the area of ​​Riddell, Hunter and Graham streets, Woodstock police said Friday.

Officers arrested suspect. A 26-year-old of Woodstock resident was charged with possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and failing to comply with a probation order, police said.

A day later, the same suspect was seen walking down Hunter Street carrying a hammer. Officers arrested the suspect behind the police station, police said.

Police did not identify the school, but Woodstock collegiate institute is at the corner of Hunter and Riddell streets.

“Police have been working closely with the school in the area and the Thames Valley district school board to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all students and staff,” police said.

“There is no evidence or reason for police to believe the school is a target for this individual and that staff and students are safe.”
