The Finnish men’s national basketball team’s opponents for next summer’s Olympic qualifiers were drawn on Monday in Switzerland. Susigengi is chasing a place in the tournament to be played in Valencia, Spain, and will face Poland and the Bahamas in the initial group stage.

Spain, Lebanon and Angola will play in the second initial group of the Spanish tournament. Only the winner of the tournament claims a place at next summer’s Paris Olympics.

Poland is a traditional basketball country and a familiar opponent for Susijeng. The countries played in last year’s European Championship in the same starting group, and Finland crushed Poland by no less than 30 points. However, Poland always held on to fourth place in the Games.

The Bahamas, on the other hand, is a new acquaintance. The country cleared its way to the Olympic qualification from the pre-qualification of the Americas, beating, for example, the tough Argentina twice. In last August’s pre-qualifying tournament, the Bahamas had big names in their ranks who showed their nails in the NBA.

– Poland is a familiar opponent, we have played even matches against them. Bahama is a completely new acquaintance and gives our group an itch, Susijeng’s head coach Lassi Tuovi comment.

“You have to stretch for a perfect button performance”

Susijeng’s tournament proceeds in such a way that the winners of the initial groups continue to the semifinals of the tournament. The winners of the semi-finals will fight for the only Olympic place in the division.

– We have to stretch to a perfect button performance so that we can play for the Olympic place. The challenger role has always suited us. A really tough tournament is coming, Tuovi anticipates the dawn of next summer.

Host country Spain is the tournament’s number one favorite.

– Spain is probably the tournament’s biggest favorite. We should focus on getting to the playoffs. We have enough to think about in terms of getting into the top two (to the finals of the tournament), Tuovi stated.

At the same time, three other tournaments will be played, the winners of which advance to Paris. The basketball Olympic qualifiers will be played from 2.-7. July. The Paris Olympics will be held from July 26-11. August.
