A man, who spoke to an Indian news channel, says he was awakened when his carriage derailed, writes The Guardian.
“10 to 15 people fell on top of me. I hurt my hand and neck. When I got off the train, I saw that there were body parts scattered everywhere – a leg here and a hand there. One person had his face disfigured,” says the man.
Close to 300 people have so far been reported dead in the accident and 900 people have been injured. In addition, many people are still feared to be stuck in the demolished train carriages.
Local residents at the site of the accident testify to a deafening bang when the trains collided with each other. Shop owner Ashok Samal rushed to the tracks to try to pull out people stuck in the derailed carriages, writes Hindustan Times.
“People were screaming loudly and there was blood everywhere,” he said. “Several of the people stuck in the carriages were crying and begging us to help them. I saw several trapped bodies in the upside-down carriages,” he told the newspaper.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to visit the accident site on Saturday.
