Survival game V Rising exploded on Steam in 2022. With over 100,000 players when it was released, it was the absolute hit of the summer. Then there was silence for a year, no major updates and hardly any new content. Now the developers are delivering and promising big things.
What kind of game is this? In V Rising you play a vampire and build your own castle. But first you have to gain strength, because you wake up completely dehydrated and have to try not to die from the first sunlight.
The special thing about V Rising is that you basically play the “bad guys” from the survival games. While nights are often deadlier in such games, they are the time when you can get stronger and hunt.
You hunt for blood, tap or kidnap people with particularly good blood, and defeat bosses to unlock new abilities and travel the world.
V Rising impresses above all with its gameplay. The makers, Stunlock Studios (Battlerite, Bloodline Champions), are known for action gameplay. With magic, different weapons and even on horseback you fight against monsters, humans and other vampires.

1 year in Early Access – 1st expansion comes for free
Here’s how it went on V Rising: The survival game has been successful on Steam. It was released in Early Access on May 17th, 2022 and should be further developed from then on. At that time, V Rising was able to attract over 150,000 players (via steamcharts).
V Rising was a real surprise hit, much like Valheim before it:

Then, however, no new content appeared for almost a year. The first major update was supposed to appear in 2022, but didn’t come. The news came in December: The big content update will finally come in 2023, but at that time there was still a date missing.
Now Stunlock Studios announce on the official website that new content is finally coming in May. This will not just be an update, but an extension and it will be completely free.
What’s in the extension? The focus of the expansions is the magic system of V Rising. The survival game offers the possibility to weave magic into the fight, but you are largely dependent on other weapons.
With the new expansion, spells should feel more powerful and more related to their respective “schools”. Blood magic should feel more vampiric, necromancers should be able to deal more with the undead. The spells can then be amplified using jewels, a new system.
It remains to be seen whether the change will be enough to play a thoroughbred mage. Along with the spell overhauls, the update features:
V Rising is still “very positive” on Steam (85% as of February 9th). The biggest point of criticism from fans is that fresh content is missing – which should come in May at the latest. If you want to pass the time until then, you will find the currently best games of the genre in our list:
