After the US launch in September 2022, considerable hype quickly developed around Barbarian. The horror film by Zach Cregger went straight to the top of the cinema charts on the first weekend and has grossed $45 million worldwide to date, on a budget of $4.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo.

With a considerable delay, the surprise hit is finally available from us. You can now stream Barbarian on Disney+ with a subscription. * Since the trailer mainly shows scenes from the first 20 to 30 minutes of the film, you should be as unprepared as possible for those as well intense and entertaining horror roller coaster ride let in.

Barbarian surprises with a violent mix of horror and humor until the finale

In the story of Barbarian, Tess (Georgina Campbell) arrives in Detroit late at night in the pouring rain, where she has a job interview the next morning. She has booked an Airbnb for one night, but then a man opens the door for her, and surprisingly the apartment is already occupied. After Tess agrees to share the house with the mysterious Keith (Bill Skarsgård) for one night, she discovers a horrible secret in the basement at night.

To reveal more would be fatal, because Zach Cregger’s film thrives on his wild unpredictability. At one point, it even feels like a whole new movie is about to start in the middle, when Justin Long is introduced as actor Cale, who gets caught up in a #MeToo controversy.

Blending shocking horror and lightening humor, Zach Cregger’s style is at times reminiscent of Jordan Peele’s genre-breaking breakthrough Get Out. In Barbarian, the director playfully takes a new direction again and again. The film sometimes changes within a very short time from big laughs to pure shock and back again.

Shower curtains were never the same after Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho and after Zach Cregger’s Barbarian Are you considering your next Airbnb booking? more than twice.
