It’s that time of series cancellations again. Not only has the latest Star Wars cancellation just been announced on Disney+, but Amazon’s streaming service Prime has also canceled its latest fantasy series after one season. The fact that the cheeky historical reinterpretation of murdered British queens told a love story with animal transformations didn’t help My Lady Jane much. The fans who were committed to the series when it launched less than two months ago are now up in arms.

Based on the novel of the same name * by authors Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton and Jodi Meadows, My Lady Jane takes its cue from Bridgerton and its alternative historiography: The historically authentic figure of Lady Jane Grey (Emily Bader), cousin of King Edward, is married against her will to Lord Guilford Dudley (Edward Bluemel) in the 16th century. However, her unexpected claim to the throne does not cost her her life in the Amazon series like her real-life role model. Instead, in the fantasy series she fights for the rights of her marginalized subjects, who are treated with hostility because they can transform into animals.

After eight 50-minute episodes, My Lady Jane on Amazon Prime * reached an interim conclusion at the end of season 1, when Jane was able to save her shape-shifting husband from death. But the real battle to regain the English throne was still ahead of them. The fact that the series was canceled this Cliffhanger pointing to season 2 forever unfinished is not well received by fantasy fans, as the reactions on social media show:

Cancelling My Lady Jane is such a misstep! I can’t think of any new series that would could overcome poor marketing so quickly and inspired so much loyalty and lively conversation among the audience. So much magic and fun. She deserves more!
