US President Joe Biden made a surprise visit to the capital, Kiev, days before the 1st anniversary of the Russia-Ukraine War. Biden’s unplanned visit to Kiev, which was shared in the itinerary to go to Poland, drew attention.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy shared a photo with Biden on his social media account and said, “Joseph Biden, welcome to Kiev! Your visit is a sign of extremely important support for all Ukrainians.”

On the other hand, the following statements were included in the written statement made by the White House regarding Biden’s visit to Ukraine:
“As the world prepares for the first anniversary of Russia’s brutal invasion of Ukraine, I am in Kiev today to meet with President Zelensky and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to Ukraine’s democracy, sovereignty and territorial integrity. When Putin launched his invasion about a year ago, he thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. He thought he could outlast us. But he was terribly wrong. I am meeting today in Kiev with President Zelensky and his team to discuss more broadly our support for Ukraine. I will announce the additional delivery of critical equipment, including artillery munitions, air surveillance radars, to help protect the people of Ukraine from bombardment. I will share this later this week, as we will announce additional sanctions against elites and corporations trying to support Russia’s war machine. Last year, the United States formed a coalition of nations from the Atlantic to the Pacific to help defend Ukraine and provided unprecedented military, economic and humanitarian support, and that support will continue.”
Biden also announced that he will travel to Poland to meet with the leaders of Polish President Andrzej Duda and other US allies in the Eastern region.
