Suriname’s president promises the country’s 600,000 residents a payout of $750 each from offshore oil discoveries. The money is deposited into a savings account with an annual interest of seven percent.

In October, French oil giant Total Energies announced a project to develop an oil field off the coast of Suriname with a capacity of 220,000 barrels per day.

Almost one in five Surinamese live in poverty today, according to World Bank figures.
