A soccer supporter from the Comoros has died after being shot by police.
The tragic event occurred in connection with the Comoros’ resounding victory in the World Cup qualifier against Ghana last Thursday, 1-0. According to authorities, the shot must have been fired by mistake. The victim, who was hit in the head, was flown to a hospital in Tanzania where he has now died.
According to the authorities, supporters must have tried to force their way into the arena in Moroni when security forces acted. The government spokesman Houmed Msaide said last week that the shot was fired accidentally.
The fatal accident has created anger among the island nation’s 900,000 inhabitants.
“Police mistakes must not go unpunished,” wrote the lawyer Djamal El-Dine Bacar on Facebook and Nadia Tourquiwho works for a civil organization, wrote:
“Another victim caused by incompetence and inhuman behavior”.
