Before Henry Cavill played the Man of Steel for the first time in 2013, he was long on the cusp of his Hollywood breakthrough – but only there. The list of big roles dem later Superman and Witcher escaped is long. Among them: one of the tragic characters in the Harry Potter canon.
Henry Cavill auditioned for Harry Potter, but Robert Pattinson got the tragic role
At the launch of Man of Steel, Henry Cavill was asked about his long road to Hollywood fame in an interview with Pete Travers on ABC.
Cavill was in the running for James Bond before Daniel Craig landed the role, and he was on author Stephenie Meyer’s wish list to play the lead character Edward Cullen in the Twilight films. For the latter, Henry Cavill wasn’t even called to audition before Robert Pattinson got the part, as he explains in the interview. It was different with Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Cavill on this:
Harry Potter, yes, there really was. I auditioned for Cedric Diggory. Robert [Pattinson] got the role […].
Cedric Diggory is the actual chosen one for Hogwarts in the Triwizard Tournament before Harry tampers with him.
The Hufflepuff student and Quidditch star is the school darling and overall nice guy, which makes his assassination at the hands of the resurrected Voldemort in the finale even more tragic. Cedric is executed as an innocent bystanderas if his death were an afterthought.
Henry Cavill had to wait quite a while until Superman and The Witcher
Robert Pattinson made an immediate impact in what was his first major film role and appeared in Twilight three years later. For Henry Cavill, the dry spell continued. From 2007 he played a supporting role in The Tudors before he celebrated his first big cinema success with War of the Gods in 2011 and two years later he made it into the greatest of all DC superheroes transformed.
He now has his own Netflix fantasy series in The Witcher, competed against Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible, and even played Sherlock Holmes. It seems unlikely that Henry Cavill will appear again in a Superman film. At DC, the future belongs more to The Batman – played by Robert Pattinson.
