Sultans of Strings Christmas Caravan stopping in Highgate

A Juno-nominated instrumental group is bringing holiday-themed music from around the world to Highgate in December.

The Sultans of String will perform at the Mary Webb Center for the Arts Dec. 2. Joining the band is guest vocalist Rebecca Campbell and nyckelharpa player Saskia Tomkins.

Billed as a Christmas Caravan show, visitors will hear original songs, as well as world-music inspired classics and seasonal favourites, a news release said.

The Sultans of String will put their spin on pieces like Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring, Jesous Ahatonhia, Greensleeves, Silent Night, as well as django-jazz rendition of Django Christmas and a rumba-Flamenca twist on Jingle Bells.

The concert is also meant to raise awareness for the United National High Commissioner for Refugees. The band has raised over $10,000 for UNHCR as a fundraising partner.

“Helping refugees is a cause we care about deeply because more than 67 million refugees worldwide are in desperate need of our support. They have every right to live a safe and dignified life as much as we do,” bandleader Chris McKhool said in the release.

“By supporting this show and partnership with the UNHCR, you are providing life-saving assistance to refugees all over the world.”

The Dec. 2 concert begins at 7 pm Tickets can be purchased through marywebbcentre.ca, by emailing [email protected] or by calling 519-358-6455.
