Sudan’s leaders want to throw out the UN envoy

In a letter to Secretary-General António Guterres, he threatens to expel Perthes.

The reason, according to the letter, is that the envoy brings misinformation and fuels violence in the country. Furthermore, al-Burhan writes that Perthes is biased and that he “blatantly meddles in Sudan’s internal affairs”.

Guterres is said to have been shocked by the letter. According to his spokesperson Stéphane Dujarric, he is proud of Perthe’s work and has full confidence in him.

A seven-day ceasefire came into effect on Monday, but fighting has been reported from the capital Khartoum throughout the week.

Several previous attempts at a ceasefire between Sudan’s army, led by al-Burhan, and the paramilitary militia RSF (Rapid support force) led by General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo have largely failed.

At least 863 civilians, including 190 children, have so far been killed and around 3,530 injured in the fighting that broke out on April 15, according to a Sudanese medical organization.
