It doesn’t always have to be NCIS, FBI or CSI. In 2017, CBS, which specializes in crime dramas with acronyms, launched the series SWAT with Shemar Moore, which follows a special unit of the Los Angeles police. Although SWAT did not achieve the ratings dominance of its station cousin Navy CIS, it did manage to last six seasons. Then CBS pulled the plug. While the story of 97 percent of all series would end at this point, that of SWAT is only now developing tension.

In Germany the police series was particularly popular Presence on Netflix a larger audience. Since 2021, it has repeatedly spent several weeks in the streaming service’s top 10 (via Netflix). But that wasn’t enough for the station bosses.

CBS canceled SWAT on May 5, 2023, the industry website Deadline reported at the time. Three days later the series was revived or “uncanceled”. According to Deadline, the back and forth was due to budget and licensing disagreements between the broadcaster and production company.
SWAT was allowed to return for a 7th and final season. This season is currently airing in the USA. The series finale was scheduled to air on May 17th, episode 13.
Now the series is getting an 8th season. As the Hollywood Reporter shows, CBS was still talking about the “series finale” in May in promotional material on Monday – and yesterday, Thursday, surprisingly announced the extension of SWAT for an 8th season. This time there is no explicit mention of the finale. The ending of SWAT is open again.
One can only speculate about the reasons, but a mixture of a lack of series after the double strike and lucrative streaming and licensing deals may have influenced one or two changes of opinion.
