Success for collecting fishing gear on Gotland – to be recycled

– It’s partly for the water environment, but also for the animals, so that they don’t get stuck in gear that is in the water and drifts but also on beaches, says Sofia Persson from the company Båtskroten, which manages the collection within the Fiskereturen project.

Not camouflage netting

For some time now, Gotlanders have been asked to hand in fishing gear that is no longer used at the recycling centers in Slite, Visby and Hemse. The interest has been great.

– But some have a reluctance to submit because they believe that the nets are sold to third parties, that they are resold as camouflage nets for war, or abroad for black fishing. But we guarantee that all the nets we collect end up at the marine recycling center in Sotenäs, says Maria Rindstam, CEO of Båtskroten.
