Student treasurer lived a life of luxury – with the nation’s money

A student in Lund is suspected of having lived a life of luxury far beyond his means.
Now the woman, who worked as a treasurer for a nation, is accused of having embezzled a total of 314,000 kroner.

Between November 1, 2020 and December 28, 2021, it was luxury goods instead of instant noodles – and according to the prosecutor, everything was paid for with the student nation’s money.

The treasurer, a Chinese citizen in her 30s, was arrested in April at Arlanda as she was about to leave the country, after the student nation’s current treasurer suspected trouble and went to the police.

The woman’s successor had discovered several, to say the least, strange purchases for hundreds of thousands of kroner, a sum that was specified before the prosecution to be 314,523 kroner.

Electronics and the zoo

The cashier is said to have used the nation’s credit card as his own and bought everything from food and coffee to electronic products, entrance tickets to zoos and subscriptions to HBO and Spotify.

The police preliminary investigation report lists a number of purchases that current board members of the nation claim have been her private.

The red prom dress, which cost SEK 6,400, was bought second-hand according to the woman – but receipts show the opposite.

The former treasurer says in questioning that she never had a thought of harming the nation’s economy. She admits that she made the purchases but denies any crime.

– All along, I’ve had a thought about replacing the nation for what I consume, she says in police interrogation.

“I have given a lot of myself”

The woman says that she has not paid back the money yet, as she did not have a good economy. She says that she is remorseful – while at the same time she thinks that in some ways she has still managed her role as financially responsible for the nation.

– I have given the company a lot, sometimes I worked 70-80 hours in a week without complaining. I mean that you have to look at both sides, one side that I didn’t fully do my duty and the other that I gave a lot of myself, she says in questioning.

The treasurer is charged with gross embezzlement in the first instance and gross disloyalty to the principal in the second instance.
