The EU countries’ military and financial support to Ukraine is decreasing sharply, according to a survey.
The Institute for the World Economy in Kiel has done mapping which shows that the trend has been downward ever since April.
In July, only about 1.5 billion euros in new aid was promised to Ukraine, which mostly came from Norway. According to the report, the countries are now focusing instead on delivering the military support that has already been promised, but are holding back on new commitments.
– Europe is becoming less and less driven to send weapons to Ukraine, says Ekaterina Rebinskaya, research leader at the institute, to Sveriges Radio.
Christoph Trebesch, head of research at the institute, points out in the report that neither the financial nor the military support covers Ukraine’s needs.
However, the institute’s mapping does not include figures for August.
Estonia’s Ministry of Defense recently announced that the country will participate in the British-led training initiative for Ukrainian soldiers. Together with Germany, Estonia will also send a field hospital to Ukraine.
The US and UK have been the most reliable contributors over the past six months, the survey shows.
– The US is far ahead of everyone else. They have contributed 25 billion euros in military support, says Rebinskaya to SR.
