Strong weather change in the north – 30-40 degrees warmer is expected

Friday morning was the coldest in Umeå in 46 years when 36.4 minus degrees were measured at the airport. According to SMHI’s statistics, it is the coldest measured temperature in Umeå since 1978 when the temperature dropped to minus 38.2 degrees.

Several cold records for the season have been broken during the week – most recently on Thursday afternoon where the thermometer in Naimakka in Kiruna showed 43.8 minus degrees.

“Can see the mercury rise in real time”

But at the turn of the week it turns and it goes from severe cold with many minus degrees to several plus degrees.

– Within the course of a couple of days, the temperature rises 30-40 degrees below zero and it’s almost like you can see the mercury rise in real time, says SVT’s meteorologist Nils Holmqvist.

The temperature drops again towards the weekend

It will still only be a short-term change, because already later in the week the temperature will drop again. But it is uncertain whether it will be as cold as before.

– It depends a lot on how much cloud is formed. For it to be really cold, the weather must also be clear, says Nils Holmqvist.

Is extreme cold becoming more common with climate change?

– Unlikely. It is rather that extreme cold becomes less common when the earth warms up, says Nils Holmqvist.
