An earthquake has occurred off the coast in the northern part of the state of California in the United States. It was followed by smaller aftershocks
According to the United States Geological Survey USGS, the earthquake had a magnitude of 7. The earthquake occurred at a depth of about 10 kilometers.
Authorities issued a tsunami warning for northern California and southern Oregon, which was later canceled. Almost five million people live in the area to which the warning was given, says news channel CNN.
The area includes, for example, the area around the San Francisco Bay. A possible tsunami was expected to hit the coast and the city of San Francisco around 22:10 Finnish time.
According to CNN, only a small rise in sea level has been observed off California.
The earthquake occurred at sea about 80 kilometers northwest of the coastal town of Eureka. Its tremors have been felt almost 500 kilometers away in the city of San Francisco.
So far, there have been no reports of damage caused by the earthquake in San Francisco. The city’s zoo was closed due to the tsunami warning and there were disruptions in the city’s traffic.
The seismologist interviewed by the news channel CNN said earlier that people living in the tsunami warning area must take the warning very seriously.
– Stay away from the coast and move to higher ground if you are in the target area, Yale University professor Maureen Long instructed CNN.
Earthquakes over magnitude 7 are measured on average only about 15 times a year in the entire world. The earthquake off California happened unusually close to the coast.
