striking accusations at the University of Tours

A report of the General Inspectorate of Education revealed “humiliating acts” and sexual violence perpetrated within the student evenings of the college of Tours Medicine. An investigation was opened.

Revelations on sexist and sexual violence continue to point out drifts within the Faculty of Medicine in Tours, especially within student associations. The university, already marked by the case on a banner, exists brandished by medical students during an evening in September 2024, had other humiliating acts and sexual violence in March. Elements highlighted by a report by the General Inspectorate for Sports and Research Education which conducted an investigation between September and December 2024.

The document has not been made public, but evokes several facts of hazing, degrading acts and sex not granted according to the declarations of the president of the University of Tours Philippe Roingeard, who was able to consult the report. The university leader mentions withHere Touraine “Humiliating acts for students such as consuming dog mash, urine ice cubes” occurring during student evenings. If these hazing facts already question respect for human dignity, other elements go further and are of sexual violence ensures Philippe Roingeard: “In this report, we see an excessive overconsumption of alcohol which leads to acts which can go so far as to impose oral relationships on young women.” There is also a question of striptease imposed on students.

A questionable banner on chemical submission

These elements, reported by the IGES which relies on at least 48 testimonies collected for three investigators, reflect an ambient atmosphere within the Medicine evenings and certain student associations of the faculty. Which is maintained by several students as suggested by the case of the sexist banner. In September 2024, several young men and young women members of Tours Medicine Faculty brandished a white sheet on which a naked and immersed, unconscious woman had been drawn in a cocktail glass. A penis represented ejaculating it overhanging it, while the inscription “Ghbites”, a play on words with the name of the GHB known as “the drug of the rapist”, completed the drawing. The image of this banner released on the networks had made a big noise and brought about a report.

This case coupled with the elements of the Igesr report pushed the public prosecutor of Tours to open a preliminary investigation for “hazing, sexual attacks, aggravated violence”. The University of Tours has also taken a series of measures: the cancellation of all galas and evenings until the end of the academic year, the seizure of the disciplinary committee against around twenty students, some of whom were members of the association behind the banner, or the suspension of fifteen medical associations of medicine.

The University clarified at Here Touraine Now constitute student associations compliance with a charter on the fight against hazing and sexist and sexual violence and oppose them better. A way to fight against “a systemic problem of promoting hazing and sexist and sexual violence in medical associations of medicine”, explains Philippe Roingeard.
