The arrival of Geoffroy Lejeune, close to the extreme right, at the head of the editorial staff of Sunday newspaper, is causing a stir in the French media landscape. Reporters Without Borders is organizing a rally in support of the Théâtre Libre in Paris on the evening of Tuesday, June 27, in the presence of political and media personalities.
The almost unanimous opposition of the employees of the Sunday newspaper (JDD) will have been useless. Geoffroy Lejeune, 34, marked on the far right, was confirmed last Friday at the direction of the Sunday newspaper, which, after 75 years of existence, is now controlled by the Bolloré group. Since then the editorial staff has been on strike.
Support is organized around journalists from the JDD. Eight former directors of the weekly rebel against the installation of the extreme right in the media, around thirty journalists’ societies have shown solidarity, while Reporters Without Borders organizes Tuesday evening an evening for the defense of the independence of journalism and the pluralism of information.
French Culture Minister Rima Abdul Malak says she is worried left-leaning politicians such as former President Francois Hollande fear for the newspaper’s future.
