Justice Minister Gunnar Strömmer says that it is very serious that a state, according to Säpo, is behind an attack on Sweden.
An Iranian cyber group was acting on behalf of the Iranian state when they hacked into a Swedish SMS service last summer and sent thousands of messages calling for revenge on Koran burners, according to the Security Police. This in an influence campaign against Sweden.
“That a state actor, in this case Iran, according to the Security Police’s assessment is behind an action that aims to destabilize Sweden or increase polarization in our country is of course very serious,” says Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer in a written comment to TT.
The incident was investigated as a serious data breach and the aim was to increase conflicts between groups in society, according to the Prosecutor’s Office.
Strömmer says that Säpo assesses that Iran is one of the countries that pose the greatest threat to Sweden. Among other things through the spread of misinformation.
“The government is informed and is in contact with the responsible authorities,” says Strömmer.
