Streamer has success with indie game, writes Twitch to become a partner: They permanently ban him

The streamer “JapImport” experienced a boom on Twitch in 2023: With “Slay the Spire” he found a game that he enjoyed and was able to record his first successes. So he happily applied to Twitch for a partnership, but then came the rude awakening: Twitch permanently banned him on Friday the 13th.

This is the story of the streamer:

  • The US streamer “JapImport” has discovered Twitch since the summer of 2022. He shows “Slay the Spire”, a game that is considered a great game and got 89% on Metacritic, but that is already very niche.
  • Over the course of a year, JapImport experienced steady growth. It gradually increased from an average of just 4 spectators to around 80 spectators. He is now number 10 among Twitch streamers for “Slay the spire”. By the way, number 1 is the German life coach, who used to be a big name at Hearthstone.
  • So JaoImport took courage and wrote to Twitch that he would like to become a partner: This is the way to earn some money with Twitch.

Twitch permanently bans streamers on Friday the 13th.

This was his rude awakening: The streamer made the mistake of applying at the wrong time and received a message from Twitch on Friday, October 13th that his account was permanently blocked because he had used an “inappropriate username”.

Somehow Twitch got the idea that his self-chosen name “JapImport” was racist in some way.

In any case, the user was told that his offense in choosing this name was so serious that the name could not simply be changed. All he could do was create a new account: He wrote that no one was ever interested in his name and now the Insta ban is coming without any warning.

Streamer just thinks Twitch is cruel

This is how the streamer reacted: He was completely desperate, he hadn’t expected that at all.

He says he finds it “cruel” to have to start over now. If Twitch told him to get a new account, why shouldn’t he just change his name?

He’s heard horror stories about Twitch, but this is the cherry on top. He couldn’t even write to anyone.

Other streamers help the unlucky raven – Twitch apologizes

This is how it turned out: Some Slay the Spire Twitch streamers changed their language to Japanese to support it. A larger streamer also stepped in to support him.

On October 14th the news came from Twitch: the ban had been lifted. Twitch made a mistake.

Nevertheless, the streamer was so scared that he quickly changed his name to “JapaneseExpert”. He is not yet a partner.

This is what lies behind it: This is a pattern that repeats itself again and again on Twitch: As a “simple streamer” you simply can’t reach anyone at the US company and get left behind. It seems incredibly important to know “who on Twitch” will advocate for you. Without personal contacts, nobody seems to answer the phone or answer any emails.

But when either the public or a larger streamer tunes in, something often happens.

On MeinMMO we have repeatedly reported on strange bans on Twitch that were only lifted after public pressure.

Twitch’s ban policy is becoming increasingly ridiculous
