The Humane Society of Kitchener-Waterloo and Stratford-Perth is trying to raise $6,000 to cover the medical costs for Toby, an injured dog.
An eight-year-old dog with a dislocated hip and multiple pelvic fractures that was medically surrendered into the care of a Stratford animal shelter has led the Humane Society of Kitchener-Waterloo and Stratford-Perth to issue an urgent appeal campaign to raise money for his medical costs.

The dog, Toby, came to the Stratford humane society shelter from a local veterinary clinic after suffering some kind of accident, the society’s community outreach director, Calla James, said. An examination, which included X-rays, revealed an open wound on the dog’s right hind paw, bruising on the right hind leg, a dislocated left hip and multiple pelvic fractures. Toby is scheduled for specialty surgery in Kitchener-Waterloo Monday morning and will require several weeks of recovery, including physiotherapy.

In total, Toby’s medical costs are expected to cost as much as $6,000 before he can be ready for adoption.
“We are not funded by the government for our charitable programs and services,” James said. “While we do have municipal animal services contracts, those are fee for service, so all the services we provide, including that surgery for Toby, are done with donations from individuals, corporate donors, our fundraising efforts and grants we can get.

“We always look to our communities and we put these stories out because cases like Toby’s are a significant cost. … We’re hoping our communities, as they are every time, are interested in helping him today.”
In addition to Toby, the Humane Society of Kitchener-Waterloo and Stratford-Perth is also fundraising to cover the cost of medical care for another emergency case, Mio the cat. Mio arrived at the Kitchener-Waterloo animal center on the same day Toby arrived at the Stratford shelter.
“Mio was the same kind of situation,” James said. “He was at a veterinary clinic in the Waterloo area, and we were contacted. He came into our care as a medical surrender. He had a broken rib and piece of that rib was puncturing his abdomen … so it had to be removed. He actually went into surgery that day when he arrived to have that broken piece removed because we needed to do that quickly. He’s recovering really well. He had his neuter surgery yesterday and he’s actually going into foster care tonight.”
For the cost of Mio’s medical care, the local humane society is looking to raise an additional $2,500 on top of Toby’s treatment costs.
Locals can make a one-time donation to support Toby and Mio by visiting www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/97445?v2=true. Any funds raised beyond the costs of care for both animals will go back to support other animals in care with the local humane society.
Locals can also support the Humane Society of Kitchener-Waterloo and Stratford-Perth by contributing in any way they can to the society’s Hope for the Holidays Campaign.
