Strategy geniuses promised us a Star Trek game – after 6 months it’s dead, the reviews on Steam are burning

Paradox Interactive has announced that it will stop developing Star Trek: Infinite. Only 6 months after the release there will be no more updates and the expansions will also be missing. Fans pull out their Battleths, unlock the photon torpedoes and fire a full load of hate at the Steam reviews.

What kind of game is this? It was actually a surefire thing:

  • The strategy specialists at Paradox have been developing and refining the brilliant SF epic “Stellaris” since 2016, for which a good Star Trek mod already exists.
  • Now with Star Trek: Infinite they basically wanted to make an accessible Stellaris with a Star Trek skin to pick up the fans. A South American studio was commissioned to implement it.
  • Interest in the game and anticipation were high because there had been no 4x game in the Star Trek universe for 25 years, since Star Trek: Birth of the Federation.
  • The game was released on October 12, 2023, but success failed to materialize and now there is a rude awakening for fans

This is the announcement from Paradox: On March 27th, fans were informed that Star Trek: Infinite would not receive any further updates (via paradox).

You don’t give reasons, but thank you and bow warmly to the left and right.

Steam Reviews fall to “Extremely Negative”

That is the reaction: The reactions are devastating: people are venting their frustration about negative reviews on Steam. The ratings there have now fallen to a dark red “extremely negative” in the last 30 days. People write:

  • “As a developer, you can also put your name on the blacklist”
  • “Absolute impudence”
  • “How can such a license go to waste?”
  • How did Star Trek Infinite go? Bad. At the start, the game only had 5,526 players at its peak. There are currently around 120 still online.

Less than a month after release, Star: Trek Infinite had already fallen below 1,000 players and was unable to recover.

And that’s why you’re discontinuing it? As GameStar suspects, problems with developer Nimble Giant could also have contributed to the fact that development had to be stopped. The South American studio belongs to the troubled gaming octopus Embracer Group and they have already cut jobs and laid off employees twice in the last few months.

Maybe you can’t cope with further development and Paradox can’t or doesn’t want to provide a replacement.

Buyers feel like Paradox is breaking the deal, feeling cheated

What is the problem? So Star Trek: Infinite just wasn’t good when it was released. Any “word of mouth” or hype through reviews fell through. The reactions were moderate to cautious and discouraged a purchase.

In any case, enthusiasm for the game wasn’t as great as Paradox had hoped, precisely because Stellaris already had a fan-made Star Trek mod that many were happy with.

After Star Trek Infinite’s mediocre start, players hoped that Paradox would at least develop the game further, like the other major franchises that got better over time.

Giving up the title so early is seen as a breach of this deal.

Especially since Paradox is already being criticized for the botched release of Cities Skylines 2 and the end of Imperator: Rome.

Why wasn’t Star Trek Infinite good? The concept of Stellaris is that you slowly build yourself up in a remote part of the galaxy and can spread out and colonize new planets until you encounter the first aliens that you have to deal with.

In Star Trek Infinite you encounter the alien races right from the start of the game, but each of the 4 races (Federation, Klingons, Romulans, Cardassians) has a huge hinterland behind them that they can colonize for an indefinite period of time, what a crude one gameplay ensures.

Star Trek: Infinite was significantly inferior to Stellaris in terms of its basic concept and simply didn’t work.
