David Harbor is now a big name in Hollywood. He has played the police chief in the hit Netflix series Stranger Things since 2016 Jim Hopper. In addition, he played important roles in films such as Black Widow, Violent Night and Hellboy – Call of Darkness. Nobody would ever cut Harbor out of their film, would they?
That’s exactly what happened in 2005’s War of the Worlds. In the Steven Spielberg-directed sci-fi blockbuster, Harbor had a small supporting role, credited as dock worker is listed. However, he does not appear in the finished film. His scene was cut, he says in an interview with Yahoo.
Sci-Fi Masterpiece: Steven Spielberg cut David Harbor from War of the Worlds…
Harbor would have played a colleague of Ray Ferrier (Tom Cruise) in War of the Worlds. After a night shift, the two would be went to a bar in the morning, which would have explained why Ray is late to pick up his kids. Harbor knew right from the start that the scene wouldn’t make it into the film.
It wasn’t a great scene and neither was she not necessary at all for the movie. Even as we were shooting it I figured it would probably be cut, but [Steven] Spielberg was there and everything was very exciting. He cast me and then became [die Szene] simply cut and was not in the film. It was grueling. Devastating and terrible…. and couldn’t even remember it
A bitter defeat, but the story goes on. In 2008, when Harbor landed a role in Spielberg’s The Trouble, he once again met the director who cut him from War of the Worlds. But Spielberg apparently had no memories more to the previous cooperation.
Years later, Spielberg produced Times of Riots. At a table read for another project, he came up to me and said, ‘Oh, David, I just wanted to tell you that I really loved you in a time of turmoil. You were great. We are so happy [mit dem Film]. I would love to work with you one day.’

The second defeat. However, Harbor showed greatness and did not draw Spielberg’s attention to his faux pas, as he continues.
I didn’t mention that we’ve worked together before and he cut me out of his film.
Nonetheless, no further collaboration between Spielberg and Harbor has come about to this day. While Spielberg is currently preparing his Frank Bullit film, Harbor will soon be starring in the video game adaptation Gran Turismo, which will be released on Sept August 10, 2023 comes to German cinemas.
