The Hidden and Unknown is arguably one of the most expensive games on Steam. For a whopping purchase price of around €1,950, it should expand the perception of the players. It is played through in less than 2 hours. The developers don’t see a problem in the short playing time, but people could take advantage of that.
What kind of game is this? The Hidden and Unknown had its Steam release on January 23, 2023. The most striking thing is the high price of the game, which is a whopping €1,949.09. The game’s graphics take some getting used to.
The Steam description of the game sounds vague at first: “The Hidden and Unknown is a story-driven game that aims to expand audience perceptions in the fields of psychology and philosophy” (via Steam).
The game description also reads cryptically and reveals little about the actual gameplay. Based on the screenshots and gameplay videos on Youtube, it can be concluded that the game is primarily a text-based event that the player follows.
How is the game rated? There are currently only three game reviews of The Hidden and Unknown. Two of them are positive, stating that the game is worth the price.
One review is negative and advises against buying the game. The user writes that it is one of the worst games ever and criticizes it vehemently. The author suspects a marketing strategy to attract attention behind the high price.

Why is the game so expensive? When asked why they decided to price the game at $2,000, developer Pro X told gaming website Gamerant the following:
They lay him so tight “how it feels right” and that it is her “Right” is to do it that way. However, the developers also stated that players could probably play through The Hidden and Unknown within 2 hours and thereby cancel the game and get the money back. “[…] You can complete the entire story and then return the game to make sure you don’t feel cheated out of your money.”
If you look at the developer’s YouTube channel, you will find several off-topic clips in which a computer voice reads Reddit threads.
It is difficult to judge whether the game is a revolutionary art project or a pure troll project. Maybe the developers are just hoping that someone will buy the game and forget to return it in time.
