There was a long queue outside the fairy tale cave at the Malmö city library before “Drag story hour”.
– We have had these storytimes for five years and it is always fully booked. It gives the children a feeling that you can be as you want and you can look as you want, says Sara Evers Espensen, head of the children’s section at the library.
“Many invisible norms”
Lady Busty and Miss Shameless choose their fairy tales with care. They have worked with children for many years and have been rewarded by the city of Malmö for their work.
– We have many invisible norms that you should look a certain way and talk a certain way and we twist that with our fairy tale moments, says Miss Shameless, who is dressed in a long black and glittery dress for the day.
Lady Busty takes out a book from one of the shelves in the library and talks about friendship and the equal value of everyone.
– Through the fairy tales, you awaken thoughts and understanding for others, says Lady Busty.
“Come and listen instead of reviewing”
The story time in Olofström had to be recorded and is instead available digitally on the municipality’s website. In Kalmar, an SD member of the council has said that he wants to ban “Drag story hour at the library” in November.
– I cannot understand the criticism. Come listen instead of reviewing something you haven’t seen, says Miss Busty.
