At least two people, a 28-year-old man in Alabama and a 15-year-old boy in South Carolina, have died as a result of the storm. The man was struck by lightning, and the boy by a falling tree.
In several places, trees and power lines have fallen over roads and houses, but the initial reports so far indicate no more extensive damage, US media reports
Thousands of flights have also been canceled or delayed. Many of the flights were canceled at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport.
