Household mince, Beef & Vegetable mince, Hybrid mince – dear child has many names.
But one thing is certain, that is that the relatively new product is becoming increasingly popular in Swedish households.
Several food giants have started selling their own versions of the mince, including Ica whose “Household mince” is made from 70 percent ground beef and 30 percent pea, and Axfood which sells the “Beef & Green” mince consisting of 50 percent ground beef, 25 percent carrot and 25 percent cauliflower .

Ellinor Puertorange development manager at Dagab, highlights factors such as the product looking like minced meat, tasting like minced meat and being placed in the fridge next to other minced meat as part of the recipe for success.
– When it’s too complicated products – which you don’t understand how to use – which are more expensive and more complicated, then you don’t buy it. It has to be simple, you have to understand it immediately and what to do with it, she tells TT.

The criticism of the minced meat: “Would never try it”
Among News24‘s readers, however, the attitude towards minced meat made from both meat and vegetables is divided.
Earlier this week got one post on Facebook quickly gained a lot of attention and at the time of writing has over 700 comments.
The majority of comments are skeptical, or unsatisfied with taste and texture after trying.
Here are some of the more negative comments:
“A way for the stores to make more money. They add cheap carrots to the mince, and still charge the same price. If I want carrots in the mince, I can buy them cheap and mix in the mince.”
“What nut came up with this? If I want greens or root vegetables in the minced meat, I have to put them in at the time I want them in and in the form I want them (grated, shredded or chunks).”
“Of course I would never try, I have no idea what’s in it and besides, if I want vegetables with the meat, I cook it on the side.”
Others are more positive:
“Absolutely, I would test that you can do without meat and let the animals live.”
“At Ica there is household mince 70% beef mince 30% pea mince, it’s tastier than beef or greens”
“I’ve bought it several times and think it’s good with minced meat sauce and tacos”
“Quite ok. You got to taste it at Willys as tacos. Even the kids who don’t eat vegetables thought it was good.”

Icas responds to the criticism
When Nyheter24 contacts ICA and presents some of the criticism against the mince, we get the answer that the goal was to create a product that resembles normal ground beef as much as possible.
“ICA Household mince has been developed to make it quick and easy to eat more plant-based in everyday life, without compromising on either taste or area of use and at a lower price. Therefore, we have made it as similar to a traditional ground beef as possible, in order to more people should dare to try,” writes the press officer Jenny Gerdes and continues:
“At the same time, of course, all traditional minced meat options are still available in the ICA stores for those who prefer it.”

Axfood comes, via the press manager Magnus Törnblomwith a similar response:
“Certainly you can add regular mince with vegetables and root vegetables, that’s what many have done over the years and we gladly encourage that as well. But if you think it’s more convenient to buy a ready-made mince where it’s already done, Nöt & Grönt an option that more and more customers have come to appreciate.”
“We believe that the combination of the product being good for both the climate and health, and also cheaper, has contributed to so many people liking it.”
