Zero vision
In 2023, 229 people died in traffic in Sweden, a figure that has been relatively constant in recent years. The Swedish Transport Administration believes that a reduced speed could save up to 50 lives per year.
The authority’s goal is that a maximum of 133 people should die in traffic by the year 2030, which is part of Sweden’s so-called zero vision.

Want to introduce a speed limit
As both Vi Bilägare and SvD have previously reported, the Swedish Transport Administration wants to introduce speed limits in Swedish cars to reduce the number of fatal accidents.
– Should we build a system based on the assumption that each individual must always make the right decision? We need something more robust than relying on each individual to always drive correctly and follow the rules, says Maria Krafft, target director for traffic safety at the Swedish Transport Administration.

Safer roads
The government has recently submitted an infrastructure bill in which it appears that the Swedish Transport Administration will receive increased resources to ensure safer roads.
However, it does not seem to be enough, as half of all motorists drive faster than is permitted. However, limiting the speed of cars is easier said than done, although similar initiatives have been tried in the past.

The EU said no
A proposal to introduce speed limits has been raised at EU level, but the proposal was not hammered through. Instead, a system was introduced that warns drivers if the current speed limit is exceeded.
However, Volvo has taken its own initiative and limited its new cars to a maximum speed of 180 km/h, a step to highlight the dangers of high speeds.
However, it does not look like the Swedish Transport Administration’s wish for speed limits will become a reality in the near future.
