During a meeting in Florida, Orbán and Trump are said to have discussed the future of Ukraine and the war going on there. On Hungarian television, Orbán says that Trump will not provide any financial support to Ukraine if he becomes president again.
Trump has previously said that the war will end “within 24 hours” if he wins the election, but has not specified how it will happen and what he means.
Trump has several times spoken out critically about NATO and, among other things, threatened to let Russia do “whatever the hell they want” against the NATO countries that do not spend enough money on defense.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has previously reacted to Trump’s actions by saying that it “undermines our security”. However, in an interview with SVT, Stoltenberg emphasizes that he expects continued American support for Ukraine, even after the American presidential election on November 5.
– If we stop supporting Ukraine and Ukraine can no longer defend itself, it is a tragedy for the Ukrainians but also dangerous for our security interests. I assume that the US remains a strong NATO ally and continues to support Ukraine, he says.
NATO important to the US
Stoltenberg believes that cooperation in NATO has not least served the United States over the years, and that it could therefore harm the country if they depart from NATO’s expectations of supporting Ukraine.
– The US knows that in NATO they have something that Russia and China do not have – over 30 friends who have promised to protect each other. It is in their security policy interest to have a strong NATO.
– Supporting Ukraine is an investment in our own security. I assume that the US will agree to it even after the election, regardless of who wins it, Stoltenberg continues.
