Stink in Helsinki – smells like eggs

A strange strong smell is spreading in Helsinki and in other parts of Nyland, reports several Finnish media. So far, there is no danger to the public, according to Finnish authorities.

It was during Sunday that residents of Helsinki and areas around the capital began to smell an unusual stench.

Iltalehtis readers describe the stench as, among other things, “egg-like and sulphurous”, like the smell that arises after fireworks are set off, like a sewage treatment plant or gas leak.

– There have been easterly winds during Sunday. The wind has increased during the course of the day, but decreases during the evening, says Peter Kondrup, TV4 meteorologist.

The stench was felt during Saturday

Residents of Russian St Petersburg have already felt the stench on Saturday, write Howlciting the Russian online newspapers Fontanka and MR7.

The rescue service and other authorities in Finland are investigating the cause and announce that so far no danger to the public has been established. There is a risk that the stench will spread over Sweden.

– If the wind continues in the direction it is blowing now, it could mean that the stench will come over Sweden during Easter Monday, says Peter Kondrup.

The emergency services emphasize that odors can travel long distances from abroad, for example in connection with forest fires, writes Ilta-Sanomat.

At 17:00 Finnish time, the Helsinki rescue service announced that they were closing the investigation, as no explanation could be found for the stench.
