Stina Nilsson is in her third season as a biathlete.
Now the Swede points out the big problems for the future in the sport.
– It is the most challenging part, says the Swede to Dagens Nyheter.
After the much talked about shift from one of the world’s best cross-country skiers to becoming a beginner in biathlon, it has now been almost three years for Stina Nilsson. The Swede is in the middle of her third season with a gun on her back and the second full season that she rides the World Cup.
Nilsson’s season
So far, it has been an individual podium at the World Cup and a SM gold in biathlon for the 29-year-old from Malung in Dalarna. But the third season has been tough and struggling for Nilsson, who only managed a modest 33rd place at the World Cup in the first half of the season.

Therefore, the Christmas break came as a most welcome break for the Swede to recharge her batteries before the second half of the season. Alongside her own development, she now gets to give her honest words about the future of the sport.

Stina points out
During the Christmas break, Nilsson has had to answer what is biathlon’s biggest challenge going forward. Then Stina clearly points out the problem that the sport must solve in the coming years.
– It is absolutely the access to snow and making snow, especially now with the electricity crisis. Then also that we shoot with lead. So I would probably say the environment in general as the most challenging part, she admits to Dagens Nyheter.

Also the national team colleagues Hanna Öberg and Lynn Persson agrees that precisely the access to snow will be the big challenge.
– It is good that we should continue to have good winters, and be able to practice winter sports, says Öberg to the local newspaper.
– The snow supply. In the long run, it will be a question that needs an answer, how to make it possible to continue competing, says Persson.
