Still far too unknown superhero series puts Kaulitz brothers in

The Kaulitz brothers are still at number 1 in the Netflix charts with their reality format. However, other formats such as Bridgerton and Rick & Morty were defeated by a British superhero drama by Andrew Onwubolu aka Rapman.

The format is called Supacell and may remind some of the British series Misfits. This was also set in London and revolved around seemingly ordinary people with unexpected superpowers.

What do the critics say about the Netflix series Supacell?

Apparently far too few of you have seen Supacell, because only seven reviews have been received from the Moviepilot community. 1st season with six episodes It’s already quite good. For example, Alex Godfrey writes in his 4-star review at Empire:

In a television sea of white noise, this is driving, obligatory fare. You thought superheroes were obsolete? Rapman comes to the rescue.

Daniel Fienberg of the Hollywood Reporter sees a lot of potential in Supacell, but also has a point of criticism:

Supacell has the specificity to become a great superhero drama, when his actual superhero machinations would not be so averageThe way the characters are loosely connected before the inevitable team-up underlines the small-world nature of South London, and there’s a certain elegance in the way Rapman and his director Sebastian Thiel let their paths cross.

Dan Einav also gave 3 out of 4 points in the Financial Times, highlighting the race aspect of the format:

Instead of being just another superhero story, this series uses the genre to reflect on power – their presence, their absence, their denial – especially in relation to black lives in a society that is still full of prejudice and inequality.

If there is a 2nd season of Supacell It is not yet clear whether this will happen.

Even in 2024, it is still necessary to examine the queer-friendliness of the series landscape. Although the largest streaming provider Netflix has many queer characters and LGBTQ+ inclusive series available to stream, this unfortunately does not represent the rest of the streaming world.
