Just over a week ago, Börje Salming passed away, aged 71.
Big brother Stig Salming mourns his brother – and now hopes that research into ALS can make progress.
– This is too tragic and so nasty for all the people who are affected, he says in TV4’s “Efter fem”.
It was in August 2022 that Börje Salming – one of Sweden’s all-time greatest hockey players – announced that he had suffered from the disease ALS. On November 24, he passed away – and he is now mourned by the entire hockey world.
The grief after Börje
Börje Salming’s older brother Stig Salming was present at his last to the last, and in the TV4 program “Efter fem” he now talks about the grief after his brother’s tragic death.
– It has been a time that has been downright horrible. But I think of Börje’s wife who has suffered as I did last year when my wife passed away. I recognize the situation in a nasty way. It is important to try to make something good out of it anyway, he says in the program.

Stig Salming also touches on the fact that Börje was highly praised in both Toronto and at home in Sweden – where he and his family were highly praised at the “Tidernas Hockeygala”.
– You are moved to tears when you think about the reception. He wanted to be involved in both parts. He wanted to experience this. In retrospect, it feels like the energy ran out in retrospect. It is difficult to answer. It feels like the body gave up after all this.

“Hopefully we will have an impact”
Big brother Stig says he hopes for an impact in ALS research, so that more people affected by the terrible disease will have better opportunities to live on.
– This is too tragic and so nasty for all the people who are affected. I hope we get an impact for money for research, he says.
