Steve Jobs never had a license plate on his car – perfectly legal

Steve Jobs never had a license plate on his car

Apple founder Steve Jobs was, in the eyes of many, a genius who revolutionized the tech industry.

Products like the iPod, iPhone and Mac fundamentally changed their respective segments, and Apple is currently the world’s second most valuable company.

Drove without a registration plate, completely legal

He was also admittedly eccentric, and one of his more odd traits was his refusal to have a license plate on his car.

This he was able to do completely legally, thanks to a loophole in the California laws.

Changed car every six months

Before 1 January 2019, a new car did not have to be fitted with a registration plate for the first six months.

Rumor has it that Jobs, who liked to be a little rebellious, therefore got himself a brand new car every six months, in exactly the same specification as the last one.

This was confirmed according to Autoevolution in 2011, a few months before Jobs died of cancer, by Apple engineer Jon Callas.

Liked Porsche and Mercedes

Steve Jobs liked sports cars, and his everyday car was a Porsche 911 – or rather a number of them.

Every six months he acquired a brand new, black Porsche 911 cab.

He later switched to Mercedes-AMG and the SL 55 model, which he tended to order in silver with a black interior.

Jobs is said to have been doing this for several decades.

Parked in disabled parking

Another sign of Steve Jobs’ rebellious side was that he had a habit of parking his car, without a license plate, in a handicapped parking lot at Apple’s headquarters. A picture of this can be viewed on the Cygnetgp Instagram account.

This despite the fact that Jobs did not have a disability permit and could undoubtedly have obtained a private parking space on the first floor.

Another sports car Jobs owned was a copy of the retro-inspired BMW Z8 roadster, which has a 400-horsepower V8 under the hood.

The car was sold at auction in 2017 for 329,500 dollars, corresponding to around 3.5 million kroner.
