Stefan suffered a medical injury – compensation is denied by Löf

When Stefan Nilsson’s catheter did not work, he would get the help of a doctor to fix the problem. Instead, it ended with the doctor stabbing a hole in the abdomen and Stefan had to be taken to Östra sjukhuset in Gothenburg.

– There they had to operate and deal with that. Then I had to go home and all that would be fixed after three months, he says.

“Very stupid way”

But due to the lack of operating theatres, Stefan has still not received help. He sought compensation from the regions’ insurance company, Löf, but there he was refused.

– They don’t think it would be possible to do anything other than what they did. But I know you can, this was a very stupid way, says Stefan Nilsson.

Statistics from the Regions’ insurance company Löf show that more and more people are seeking compensation for medical injuries. Last year, the number of notifications increased by six percent compared to the previous year.

According to Pelle Gustafson, chief physician at Löf, the increase is particularly noticeable in the younger population.

– We believe that there is an increased awareness of this insurance. There is an increased tendency to report injuries, which appears to be generational.

Just over a third receive compensation

In 2023, it was only about a third of those who reported who later received compensation. Löf cannot comment specifically on Stefan Nilsson’s case, but says that you should receive financial compensation when care is interrupted.

– If we can demonstrate that there were deficiencies in the care of some kind, where people simply did not do what they should or did not follow the best practices known today, then it is very likely an injury that we compensate, says Pelle Gustafson.

Stefan Nilsson has appealed the rejection and does not intend to give up.

– I will fight as much as possible, then we will see. Not just for my own sake, I think this is so badly and carelessly managed. They simply lie, that they couldn’t do it any other way, he says.
