At the end of the year, Steam has presented the 12 games that have been played the most on the PC platform based on the number of concurrent players. Besides Destiny 2, there are many MMOs on the list, especially free games. But there is also a surprise with Goose Goose Duck: This is a Free2Play variant of Among Us.

What is this list? Steam has unveiled the 12 games that surpassed 240,000 concurrent players in 2022. This has been summarized under the term “most played”.

The games are in no set order, nor is Steam revealing any numbers: it’s just the 12 games that exceeded 240,000 concurrent players at any point in 2022.

Many classics dominate the player numbers on Steam 2022

These are the 12 games:

  • Counter-Strike: Global Offensive – a perennial favorite on Steam
  • Destiny 2 – the loot shooter is often said to be dead, but it still has its moments. Apparently it helps that Destiny 2 offers a Free2Play experience with “New Light”.
  • ARK: Survival Evolved – the dinosaur classic is back in 2022. Already waiting for part 2.
  • Apex Legends – the shooter from EA is free to play and is considered a fast, well-made shooter
  • DOTA 2 – the MOBA is best known for its big e-sports tournaments that make people millionaires overnight

  • PUBG – once the biggest game in the world, will still have its fans in 2022
  • Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel – a free card game in a popular universe
  • Lost Ark – the only real MMORPG on the list, certainly benefits from being new and free to play
  • Goose Goose Duck – an “Among Us” variant with ducks, sure to be the surprise on the list. It’s free, unlike Among Us

  • Dying Light 2 – apparently had a big release hype, people are into zombies
  • Elden Ring – for many the game of the year 2022
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – CoD came back on Steam after 5 years. This makes it look a bit like a foreign body, because it actually belongs in the Battle.net launcher. But it’s enough for the 1st league.
    • The games can be played in any order – all had over 240,000 concurrent players sometime in 2022.

    What do you notice about the list? When it comes to “most played”, the “Free2Play” games clearly have an advantage. Only Elden Ring, CoD: Modern Warfare 2 and Dying Light 2 are “actual purchase titles”. Ark also nominally requires a purchase, but you can get it very cheaply.

    The Steam list also shows that 2022 was a rather “quiet” gaming year, only Elden Ring and Lost Ark are new game brands, CoD and Dying Light are sequels to established series.

    A lot of other games are already a few years behind. CS:GO and DOTA 2 are Valve’s in-house classics, which are in this list every year.

    The biggest surprise is definitely Goose Goose Duck, which arguably just works as a Let’s play Among Us for free alternative.
